INTRODUCTION
You usually think you've seen the best of what Laguna has to offer but wait until you see the Hulugan Falls, Talay Falls and Aliw Falls located in Luisiana, Laguna. The town of Luisiana is a fourth class municipality and is dubbed as the “liitle Baguio” by its locals because of it’s high elevation, sitting atop the Sierra Madre mountain, giving it a cooler climate than the rest of the province.
One of Luisiana’s Barangay, San Salvador, is where you can find the underrated waterfalls called “Hulugan Falls” with an approximate height of 90 meters. Downstream of Dapi River leads to Balanac River in Magdalena, Laguna. It is huge, tall and majestic. The splash of water creates this dramatic mist, which is surprisingly relaxing. The wall of the falls is filled with green plants making it look even more spectacular.
Aliw Falls, on the other hand, is a known side trip to Hulugan Falls because it’s in a nearby barangay, San jose, but we think it deserves more credit than just a sidetrip option.
The trail to Aliw Falls is a walk in the park. The 65 ft. tall Aliw Falls is a class of its own because of different reasons. The flat rocks and edges where the water cascades makes the sight of Aliw Falls surreal, almost man made. The plunge pool is more accessible compared to Hulugan Falls. You can swim and even sit on the rocks under the waterfalls.
Talay falls, the third on the list, is composed of a series of 3 water falls cascading through a large boulders of rocks. The exploration of Talay waterfalls system is an adventure itself. In one waterfall, you have to use a vine to rappel your way up; and all sorts of ‘maneuvering’ skills to go all the way through a series of big rocks. Each part of the system has its distinct beauty, and since it is at the foot of Mt. Banahaw, the forest is also serene and scenic.
